Job Description
The Office of Communications and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks applications and nominations for the position of Business Manager. Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, the Business Manager is responsible for financial compliance and oversees the human resource activities of the unit.

The division comprises several cross-functional teams, employing more than 50 full-time professionals with expertise in design, development, video production, content strategy, feature writing, editing, marketing, media relations, internal communication, and special events.


Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities

Financial Compliance
  • Provides guidance on university fiscal policy
  • Develops, implements, and executes a ledger review process to verify the accuracy of charges coded to departmental ledgers
  • Oversees labor distribution
  • Manages tax reporting and compliance
  • Oversees year-end close
  • Leads response to annual self-assessment of controls survey
  • Manages contract and procurement processes


Human Resources
  • Provides guidance on HR policy and procedures
  • Executes human resources transactions within the ERP system
  • Manages the position classification review process
  • Supports staff search processes
  • Leads time and absence management and reporting


University Events Financial Oversight
  • Reviews expense submissions to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Develops, implements, and executes a monthly recode process to ensure costs are tagged to the correct event in the ERP system
  • Updates budget vs. actual spend information
  • Coordinates with Finance and Administration on quarterly discretionary spend reporting


Leadership
  • Manages one direct report
  • Partners with departmental leadership to support the strategic priorities of the office
  • Continuously evaluates opportunities for, proposes, and implements process improvements
  • Supports special projects and new initiatives

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Skilled in utilizing Microsoft Excel and ERP software
  • Ability to learn and embrace new software
  • Ability to generate financial reports and analyze data
  • Ability to understand and adhere to university policies and procedures
  • Ability to research, problem solve, and recommend solutions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise good judgment, and maintain a professional demeanor
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively on teams
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to document processes and procedures


Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience related to position responsibilities


Preferred:
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience with university ERP (DASH)
  • Supervisory experience
