Job Summary:
The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs Graduate Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the division's mission to promote student well-being and success. This position provides key support for marketing and communication efforts that aim to reach audiences across the University of Utah campus community.
The Graduate Assistant will work closely with the Internal Marketing and Communications Manager to produce content for a variety of communication channels, with a primary focus on writing articles for the division's newsletters, which are shared division-wide and campus-wide. These articles inform students, faculty, and staff about updates within Student Affairs, highlight newsworthy initiatives, and showcase the division's impact on student success. This role will also assist in developing messaging for university leadership and collaborative campus partners.
Additional content responsibilities may include supporting social media, website updates, videography, photography, and graphic design. The Graduate Assistant may also assist with event support, scheduling, meeting coordination, and other administrative tasks as needed.
This position is ideal for a graduate student who is detail-oriented, passionate about writing and storytelling, and committed to student support, advocacy, and holistic success in higher education.

Terms of Graduate Assistantship:
  • Work 20 hours per week throughout the academic year with consistent fixed office hours, including occasional evening and weekends
  • Attend regular staff meetings
  • Adhere to all university and departmental policies
  • Professionally represent Student Affairs and articulate its mission and vision
  • May be asked to adjust working hours to reflect necessary organizational needs. Some nights and weekends may be included.

Stipend:
  • If hired, the graduate assistant will receive a stipend of $12,000 for the spring semester.

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Write, edit, and proofread articles for division-wide and campus-wide newsletters.
  • Develop clear, engaging messaging for university leadership and campus partners.
  • Produce content for various communication channels, including social media, websites, videos, and photography.
  • Support marketing and communication projects that highlight Student Affairs initiatives and impact.
  • Manage and update a content calendar to track deadlines, events, and publishing schedules.
  • Conduct interviews with subject matter experts, students, and staff to gather information for stories.
  • Collaborate with departments across Student Affairs to ensure accurate, timely, and aligned messaging.
  • Assist with event support, including day-of logistics and communication needs.
  • Provide administrative support such as organizing meetings, preparing materials, and coordinating project tasks.
  • Ensure all content reflects the division's mission of supporting student well-being and success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a University of Utah student pursuing a graduate degree: Master's, Ed.D, Ph,D or related.
  • Previous experience working in marketing and communications encouraged.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including interviewing and collaboration.
  • Ability to work effectively individually with little supervision and collaborate to achieve goals in a team.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Asana, Canva, Sprout Social, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


Preferences
  • Experience in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Experience writing articles or stories for broad or diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with content creation for social media, websites, or newsletters.
  • Experience using multimedia tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Basic understanding of photography and videography.
  • Understanding of Student Affairs or prior experience working in a higher education setting.
