Job Description Summary

Penn GSE's inaugural Vice Dean of Marketing and Communications will champion the school's efforts to share its mission, distinctive programs, scholarship, and impact with audiences around the world. A seasoned storyteller, marketing professional, and strategic leader, the Vice Dean will shape, staff, and steer the school's newly formed, unified Marketing and Communications Team. Reporting to the Dean of GSE, the Vice Dean will oversee strategy and direct implementation of schoolwide communications, marketing, branding, and creative design. The Vice Dean will advise the Dean and other school leadership and partner closely with them to position Penn GSE as a leader among its peers.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities
  • Strategy & Planning: Develop, oversee, and drive a strategic and tactical marketing and communications operation for GSE. Work closely with school leadership to refine and promote the GSE brand and identity. Create a strategic marketing and communications plan including goals, metrics, budgets, and forecasts to drive the school forward. Consistently review operational plans and refine, as needed, to ensure that results are achieved. Oversee Marketing and Communications budget, including forecasting a multi-year budget plan aligned with the strategic needs of the school.
  • Communications Strategy: Oversee Penn GSE's communication strategy, including directing all internal and external communication objectives. Develop and oversee a multi-channel communications calendar that engages GSE's many stakeholder groups, showcasing faculty, teaching, students, research, programming, partnerships, and alumni in ways that support GSE's vision and mission. Manage staff, including the Executive Director of Communications, who is responsible for print, newsletters, media relations and email listservs. Develop guides, policies, and training materials for communication in GSE.
  • Creative, Brand, and Marketing Strategy: Oversee the marketing strategy for GSE, including establishing the value proposition and differentiators. Using quantitative and qualitative research, refine and update brand strategy to ensure that the school is positioned correctly among our peers. Implement a variety of marketing tactics to promote GSE to our intended audiences. Advise on marketing strategies for recruitment, development, and various school events. Manage the Creative Director who oversees admissions marketing, branding, graphic design, photography, videography, content, social media and the GSE website. Collaborate with and supports various GSE areas including Admissions (both traditional and executive format programs), Development and Alumni Relations, and professional learning.
  • Office Operations: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Marketing and Communications. Manage a highly-skilled, talented, and growing team; manage successful and productive relationships with agencies, vendors, freelancers, and others, as needed, to achieve goals. Ensure efficiency in all processes, utilizing data-driven decision-making and focusing on meeting and exceeding outcomes and expectations.
  • Advising: Serve as a key member of the school's leadership team, advising the GSE Dean and other leaders on marketing and communications opportunities and challenges. Work closely with organizations, departments, and centers within the school to ensure alignment with the brand and mission and advise on marketing and communications strategies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications

ESSENTIAL:
  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of seven - ten years of both marketing and communications experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be an expert in marketing and communications trends in the higher education sector, having overseen a portfolio of creative, innovative, and exciting work and having demonstrated the ability to conceive and execute strategic programs. Must be results-oriented with the ability to independently manage multiple priorities simultaneously.


PREFERRED:
  • Master's Degree preferred. Experience in higher education preferred. Senior-level marketing or communications position experience with supervisory responsibilities. Strong data analysis skills and knowledge of data privacy policies.
  • Experience producing, designing, and distributing content for social media and web in a strategic context. Excellent familiarity with user experience and data tracking. Familiarity with CRMs, such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, HubSpot, MailChimp or similar. Experience working in a highly collaborative team environment preferred.
  • Experience responding to urgent and unexpected deadlines while juggling and prioritizing multiple requests successfully, managing schedules, resources and expectations, and working in a fast-paced environment with high expectations, tight project turnarounds, and frequent deadlines.
  • Established track record as collaborator in the workplace, as well as a record demonstrating effective leadership as a strong and motivational manager. Experience managing teams and coordinating large projects while successfully championing an integrated approach to message and design.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
